  • A teacher in New York was teaching her class about bullying and gave them the following exercise to perform. She had the children take a piece of paper and told them to crumple it up, stomp on it and really mess it up but do not rip it. Then she had them unfold the paper, smooth it out and look at how scarred and dirty is was. She then told them to tell it they’re sorry. Now even though they said …they were sorry and tried to fix the paper, she pointed out all the scars they left behind. And that those scars will never go away no matter how hard they tried to fix it. That is what happens when a child bully’s another child, they may say they’re sorry but the scars are there forever. The looks on the faces of the children in the classroom told her the message hit home. Pass it on.

    ohyesjess:

Even when I was a kid, I always knew it was so messed up how teachers and schools handled bullying (er, didn’t handle bullying). It was never addressed in classes, and it was dealt with so poorly in private. Whenever I would speak up about it to a teacher, I was usually told to grow a thicker skin, or the finger was pointed at me for *letting* it happen. They would even say this to my parents when it got so bad that they had to get involved and ask to conference with a teacher. Basically a huge “Shut up and deal with it.” I’m 24 years old, and though what I got wasn’t even close to as bad as what many kids experience, it still affects many, many parts of my life.

Sharing for all of my teacher friends back home, in hopes that they can be a part of stopping this bullshit.

  • How, then, should we measure students and teachers? In ninth grade, my students learn about the scientific method. They learn that in order to collect good data, scientists control for specific variables and test their impact on otherwise identical environments. If you give some students green fields, glossy textbooks and lots of attention, you can’t measure them against another group of students who lack all of these things. It’s bad science.

Until we provide equal educational resources to all students and teachers, no matter where they come from, we can’t say — with any scientific accuracy — how well or poorly they’re performing. Perhaps if we start the conversation there, things will start making a bit more sense.

  • It’s a Biblical principle. If you double a teacher’s pay scale, you’ll attract people who aren’t called to teach. To go in and raise someone’s child for eight hours a day, or many people’s children for eight hours a day, requires a calling. It better be a calling in your life. I know I wouldn’t want to do it, OK? And these teachers that are called to teach, regardless of the pay scale, they would teach. It’s just in them to do. It’s the ability that God give ‘em. And there are also some teachers, it wouldn’t matter how much you would pay them, they would still perform to the same capacity. If you don’t keep that in balance, you’re going to attract people who are not called, who don’t need to be teaching our children. So, everything has a balance.

Alabama State Senator thinks raising teacher pay is against the teachings of the Bible (via desertmar)

Who would have believed an Alabama Republican would have a sensible explanation of why our legislatures suck?

They pay too well, so they attract greedy people who shouldn’t be there.

    (via blissandzen)

And this is why the sheer number of teachers I know who vote Republican simply astounds me.

  • Every person in this chamber can point to a teacher who changed the trajectory of their lives. Most teachers work tirelessly, with modest pay — sometimes digging into their own pocket for school supplies, just to make a difference. Teachers matter. So instead of bashing them, or defending the status quo, let’s offer schools a deal: give them the resources to keep good teachers on the job and keep the best ones. And in return, grant schools flexibility to teach with creativity and passion, and stop teaching to the test — and to replace teachers who just aren’t helping kids learn. That’s a bargain worth making.

  • One teachers approach to preventing gender bullying in a classroom

“It’s Okay to be Neither,” By Melissa Bollow Tempel

Alie arrived at our 1st-grade classroom wearing a sweatshirt with a hood. I asked her to take off her hood, and she refused. I thought she was just being difficult and ignored it. After breakfast we got…

Amazing and brave teacher takes on gender stereotyping.

  • down to cuddle 24/7: On ageism and the bullshit that is our school system.

    et-tu-dionyse:

Ageism is really a major reason as to why I want to teach middle school.

Because y’know what? People of that age group are ridiculously underestimated and no one’s doing them a favor by assuming that they’re incapable of absolutely anything aside from coloring inside the lines and reading 20 page…

I can’t stand it when people think kids are stupid or ignorant to the world around them. More times then not, they’re more aware then adults.

  • The problem is not that we are trying to cut too much, but we’re focused on cutting the most minor expenses that help the most vulnerable, the largest base of potential workers who make up the unemployed. The largest personal incomes are being protected, tax cuts for the top 2%.
